Is LifeBoard safe to use?

LifeBoard is designed with special care to provide life-critical buoyancy for both the rescuer and the distressed individual. Therefore, we have designed LifeBoard with:

1. a safety strap to ensure that the equipment is not lost during a rescue operation

2. Nine handles that provide stabilization for multiple distressed individuals.

3.A foam-filled core that ensures buoyancy even if the plastic shell is damaged

Leading research in the field states that 97% of all fatal drownings occur during rescue attempts without the use of buoyancy aids. This recognizes buoyancy aids as a critical element in increasing the safety of both the rescuer and the victim.

Therefore, it is of utmost importance that civilian rescuers take a buoyancy aid with them. Where other buoyancy aids may provide buoyancy for 1-2 people, we have designed LifeBoard with buoyancy for up to six people. That's why we believe LifeBoard is the best choice for a high buoyancy rescue device for civilian lifesaving.

Is LifeBoard simple to use?

LifeBoard is developed with the vision that our rescue equipment should be usable by everyone. LifeBoard is therefore designed for and tested by more than 200 civilian users with different water skills, gender, age and background. We have collected data from our tests and continuously optimized and adjusted the equipment so that as many people as possible have good conditions for using the equipment. This does not mean that everyone can and should perform a civilian rescue. It means that if you feel able to stop the accident, we have done everything we can to give you the best conditions to do just that.

Because rescue is never simple, but we believe LifeBoard is the simplest and safest option for civilian rescue equipment.

Who can use LifeBoard?

Lifesaving is not for everyone. In LifeBoard, we also allocate a portion of our time and resources to preventive efforts. If people learn how to behave in open water, fewer and fewer will end up in tragic drowning situations

That said, it's a fact that people go into the water to save each other. We strongly encourage assessing the situation before entering the water, but also understand that a father doesn't wait on land while his daughter is drowning. That's why LifeBoard is designed for anyone who finds it necessary to perform a civilian rescue.

One should always call 1-1-2 before attempting a rescue, and one should avoid entering water conditions that they are not comfortable swimming in. If one does enter such conditions, they should always bring rescue equipment.

If a rescue device, such as a LifeBoard, is brought along, both the rescuer's and the distressed person's buoyancy are increased. The distressed person is often in a state of panic or shock and may tend to grab onto the rescuer. If the rescuer does not have a flotation device, it can, in unfortunate cases, result in the unintended drowning of the rescuer.  Therefore, it is absolutely essential for the rescuer to carry a flotation device for civilian lifesaving.

LifeBoard

In this category you will find answers to frequently asked questions about LifeBoard. About usage, safety and much more.

Is LifeBoard worth the money?

In Denmark, on average, a fatal drowning accident occurs every 5 days. This is undoubtedly an unbearable loss for relatives, which is where our attention is focused first and foremost. No one should lose a loved one in a drowning accident.

In addition, from a societal perspective, there is also a massive economic loss associated with a drowning accident. The Council for Greater Bathing and Water Safety estimates that it costs society approximately DKK 30 million for every death caused by a drowning accident.

Where there is water, there is a risk of drowning, and even seemingly harmless water can lead to accidents through inattention. With LifeBoard, a concrete and visible effort is made to ensure safety, which is available around the clock. At LifeBoard, our goal is to create the safest beaches in the world.

Is it easy to balance and paddle on a LifeBoard?

Our rescue equipment is designed wide to make it more stable to lie on. The non-slip rubber base indicates where to lie.

Good swimmers and surfers quickly find their balance in the middle of the board, placing the nose of the board on the surface of the water and paddling with arms and legs. Less experienced swimmers take some time to find their balance in calm water. If balance is challenging, you can hold on to a handle and use your legs to balance and provide propulsion.

In waves, all rescue equipment is difficult to use. That's why we also encourage people to take water and wind conditions seriously. If you choose to attempt a rescue in waves, you can pull the board behind you until you are through the surf.

Experienced and inexperienced rescuers have in common that swimming speed is increased and fatigue is reduced compared to swimming with a lifebuoy. This is according to a study from 2023 by a group of students at Aalborg University. The report can be found under the tab Information -> Brochures.

Can LifeBoard be used in waves?

LifeBoard provides life-critical buoyancy regardless of water conditions. However, it is particularly effective and fast in flat water or smaller waves that allow you to lie on the board and paddle. In larger waves, we encourage you to check your abilities carefully before entering the water and pull the board behind you until you are through the surf and can stay stable on the board.

An experienced surfer or swimmer will be better equipped and more successful at navigating, paddling or diving through the waves. An inexperienced swimmer - regardless of equipment - will be challenged to reach a distressed victim in large waves. However, a LifeBoard allows an exhausted rescuer to lie down on the board and take a rest during the rescue attempt. This reduces the risk of escalating the accident, as a failed rescue attempt in waves will often just mean that a tired rescuer is washed ashore by the waves.

Can rescue equipment escalate swimming accidents?

There's no evidence of that.

We asked bathers at beaches without life-saving equipment, beaches with lifebuoys and beaches with LifeBoards what they would do if they saw a drowning accident 100 meters from shore. Overall, 80% of respondents said they would alert other bathers or 1-1-2 first. Approximately 60% of bathers responded that they would attempt a rescue attempt in the water, regardless of whether there is a lifebuoy, LifeBoard or no equipment available on the beach. In other words, our research does not suggest that lifesaving equipment can cause beachgoers to feel inappropriately pressured to make a rescue attempt.

Can LifeBoard be used in harbors or from a boat?

Our mission is that the most optimal rescue equipment should always be available. This means that LifeBoards should be available at beaches where you can go directly into the water or at harbor baths and other areas where there is activity on the water and where other rescue equipment cannot reach the victim. At harbors or from boats, we do not recommend using LifeBoards, as these are most often fall or 'man overboard' accidents. Here, it makes the most sense to throw a lifebuoy to the casualty, as the casualty will usually be within throwing distance of the rescuer.

When should I choose a LifeBoard over a lifebuoy?

LifeBoard is designed for areas with bathers or recreational activities on water, such as beaches and lakes. In these areas, water falls are less frequent and the lifebuoy's throwing range of approximately 5-10 meters will often be insufficient, as many swimming activities take place further from land.

If we look at our survey, it showed that there is a big difference between whether respondents would use the rescue equipment in question or another means of buoyancy. Of the respondents who would enter the water to make a rescue no matter what, 4/10 would use buoyancy during a rescue on beaches with a lifebuoy versus 8/10 on beaches with a LifeBoard. This means that beaches with LifeBoards are more likely to have civilian rescuers entering the water with buoyancy aid and therefore less likely to have high-risk rescues.

If you are unsure about your choice, feel free to contact us for non-binding advice.

Isn't it dangerous to attempt a swimming rescue?

The risk of staying in water will always be present, but with buoyant rescue equipment, this risk is significantly reduced. As a rescuer, the fundamental rule is always to remember to bring a flotation device, and here, LifeBoard is one of the best options, as the buoyancy of LifeBoards is significantly higher than other rescue equipment on the market

Basic rule: call 1-1-2, only go out if you are comfortable with water conditions and always bring floatant

Is LifeBoard stolen or misused?

The public respects LifeBoard as rescue equipment! Theft and vandalism is a frequent concern for municipalities, and we have not experienced any vandalism or theft for several seasons. We belive that the GPS has a significant deterrent value, because we at LifeBoard quickly can track potentially lost rescue equipment and help the municipalities get it back.

How much does LifeBoard cost?

Our rescue equipment and associated service package is constantly evolving. Our ambition is to make a product at prices that are competitive with current coastal lifesaving stations. You can always get current prices by contacting us here.
